In that role, she began to notice a common pattern among construction groups – they really didn’t have many avenues in terms of marketing and advertising. Unlike normal businesses that appeal to the general public, contractors needed a way to reach project owners and other individuals capable of creating major development decisions.
At this point, the seeds were planted and ideas began to grow – but, as with any business venture, not without their fair share of associated risks. Pearman eventually moved on from her business development position and started her own venture, gambling her personal finances and professional reputation on an idea she hoped would one day grow into a successful company. She created DMS to provide underserved industries like construction, manufacturing, maintenance, and others with an opportunity to grow their operations through targeted and customizable marketing campaigns.
The early days of DMS, like so many other businesses, were a bit rocky. But as any economist will tell you, success isn’t just handed out freely. The company started out at a small office on Ridge Road in Munster, IN, before Pearman decided to relocate operations to her home in an effort to refocus the company’s mission into what it currently does best – helping businesses grow. Also during these months of restructuring, Pearman purchased an advertising specialties company which enabled DMS to provide a greater range of services to its clients such as wearables, clothing, and other promotional products.
After several years of success with DMS, in which the company grew its portfolio considerably and earned several accolades from the local business community, Pearman started to imagine a news outlet that was specifically intended to contain a by-business-for-business aesthetic that would allow an executive audience to read about the exact topics they were seeking. From these early concepts, the publication Building Indiana came to life. Today, Building Indiana is one of DMS’s best products, reaching over 60,000 readers per issue and earning the title of the largest business-to-business publication in the state of Indiana.
